In this third volume in The Book of the New Sun, Severian takes his post as the Lictor of Thrax, but loses his companion, Dorcas. He deserts his post and goes to the mountains, encountering a terrifying creature called the Alzabo and rescues a young boy who is orphaned in the attack.
