Philip K. Dick’s screenplay adaptation of one of his signature novels features an ending that differs markedly from that of the novel. Dick included far more parenthetical description and interpretation than is standard for screenplays, providing considered, after-the-fact portraits of Glen Runciter, Ella Runciter, Joe Chip, Pat Conley, and Ubik itself. The Ubik ‘ads’ are presented as actual intrusions rather than chapter headings, the soundtrack is a central element, and the dysfunctions in time and perception are imagined as enacted on a movie screen.
