About this book

For the very first time in Folio Society history, we are publishing the beloved children's classic Heidi. At a moment when so much of modern life is lived online, and many of us struggle with a sense of disconnection, this tale about the healing powers of nature and community is a sweet antidote.

After losing her parents, a young girl is sent to live with her reclusive grandfather high in the Swiss Alps, surrounded by wildflowers and grazing goats. This simple way of life gradually softens both Heidi and her misanthropic grandfather. It is a story that celebrates the pleasures of everyday life: a hawk flying overhead, a meal of fresh bread and cheese, the sunset over the mountains. It also emphasises the importance of caring for others and belonging to something larger than ourselves.

This Folio book is illustrated by Taryn Knight, whose beautiful watercolour artwork captures the loveliness of the Swiss mountains and valleys. The cover includes an inset portrait of Heidi, surrounded by a blocked design of edelweiss flowers, while the slipcase features a wraparound illustration of the hills and hut where she lives. Inside, there are six full-page colour illustrations, as well as several charming vignette artworks sprinkled throughout the book.
