What can I list?
You can list any edition in the Rare Bindings catalogue, including special editions, signed and numbered copies, subscription-box exclusives, and fine press printings. If yours is missing, request it and we will create a full catalogue record for you to list against.
Can I sell several books as a lot?
Yes. You can list a single book or a complete lot. Add each book to the same listing, then photograph the group together.
Which photographs are required?
We ask for four identity shots of every copy: front, back, spine, and copyright page: make sure the print numbers on the copyright page are legible. If your copy has its dust jacket, is signed, numbered, damaged, or part of a lot, we ask for those photographs too.
How does the buyer pay?
The buyer pays you directly with PayPal Goods & Services. Before your listing can go live, we ask you to save the PayPal address you want buyers to use. We show that saved address on the order page, so neither of you needs to arrange payment in chat. The buyer sends the order total there with Goods & Services, then returns to the order and marks the payment sent.
Sending the payment as "Paying for an item or service" may qualify an otherwise eligible purchase for PayPal Buyer Protection. PayPal decides, under the terms for the buyer's PayPal account. Friends & Family/personal payments are not eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection and must not be used for a commercial purchase. Rare Bindings does not process or independently verify the payment, refund, dispute, account ownership, or protection eligibility. Rare Bindings policy does not allow sellers to add a surcharge for PayPal fees. Regional PayPal terms and applicable law may add further restrictions. Rare Bindings deducts no marketplace fee. PayPal deducts a Goods & Services receiving fee from every sale, and may add cross-border, currency-conversion, or account-specific fees.
Who pays for shipping?
The buyer does, at the amount you set, and we show your price and your shipping cost together before they order. Happy to ship somewhere free? Make that destination free and the buyer pays nothing for postage.
How do I work out what to charge for shipping?
Let our calculator help. Enter the country you post from, the packed weight and dimensions of the parcel, and the declared value, and it estimates an amount and service for every destination you cover. Treat estimates as guidance, not a binding quote: carriers set their own prices, so confirm the actual cost with yours before you rely on one. The amount you enter is the one buyers see, whether it is our figure, your own, or free. If we cannot produce an estimate for a route, you enter the amount yourself.
How many destinations can I ship to?
As many as you like, or as few. Domestic is always included, and beyond that you choose: single countries, whole regions such as the European Union, or everywhere at once with a rest of world amount. Price a region in one go or country by country, and leave out anywhere you would rather not post. If you want guidance, our calculator can estimate an amount for every destination you cover.
What if a buyer is somewhere I have not listed?
They cannot order your copy. We only take an order where your shipping covers the buyer’s country, so a rest of world amount is the simplest way to stay open to collectors everywhere.
Can I change the shipping cost after someone buys my copy?
Only when the shipping still needs your confirmation. When you marked the buyer’s country free, or entered a fixed price for it that still matches the country you post from, Buy now opens the order immediately at that total, so there is nothing left to change. Any other shipping price, including a free or fixed amount set for a whole region or the rest of the world, and any produced by our calculator, including a carrier option you selected from it, needs your confirmation before payment becomes due: confirm them unchanged and the order opens straight away, because the buyer already agreed to that total, or revise them and the buyer confirms or declines the new total first. Your asking price is fixed either way, and if the buyer declines or withdraws, your copy goes back on the market.
Can I change shipping on a listing that is already live?
Yes. While your listing is a draft, published, or paused, you can revise your destinations, amounts, services, and dispatch time. Those changes apply to future purchases. A copy that is already reserved or ordered keeps the terms agreed for it.
How long do I have to send it?
You choose your dispatch time when you set up shipping: one, two, three, five, or seven business days. Buyers see it before they order, so pick the one you can keep during a busy week rather than your best case. The clock starts when the order is paid, not when it is placed, and the order page shows the exact date. That date is fixed at payment, so changing your dispatch time or shipping country afterwards does not move it.
What if I miss the date?
You get a reminder the day before. If the date passes without a dispatch, we tell you and the buyer, and you have 24 hours to put it right: add tracking, send us a photograph of a receipt showing you handed the parcel over in time, or arrange a refund with the buyer. Tracking is the simplest of the three, and it covers a carrier that takes a day to scan. They do have to take the parcel within two days of your ship-by date, though, so tracking on a parcel still sitting in your hall will not hold. The other two are answers rather than endings: a receipt has to be looked at by us, and a refund has to be confirmed by the buyer.
Can I ask for more time?
Yes, once per order, for three extra business days, and the buyer decides. You can ask before the date or after you have already missed it, because a seller who knows they are going to be late is exactly the one who should ask. If the buyer agrees, the new date replaces the old one and the miss does not count against you.
What happens if late dispatches keep happening?
A single late dispatch is a warning; it is a bad week, not a pattern. Two unexcused late dispatches within 90 days pause new sales while your current orders carry on, and we tell you when it happens and why. Missed dates you explained do not count towards it, whether that was a parcel the carrier took in time, a receipt we accepted, or an extension the buyer agreed.
How does package tracking work?
When you ship, add the carrier and tracking number in Rare Bindings. We mark the order as shipped, keep the tracking details visible to both of you, and update the order automatically when the carrier reports delivery.
Can I edit or pause a listing?
Yes. Until a buyer places an order, you can update the price, photographs, and details, or take the listing off the market. You can also change your saved PayPal address. The new address applies to future orders, while an order already placed keeps the address saved with it. You can remove the address entirely once all your listings are drafts or ended, so every live listing always has an address ready for payment.
What happens if the buyer does not pay?
Every order shows a payment due date. If the buyer has not marked a payment sent by then, we stop showing your PayPal address on the order and tell the buyer not to send anything against it. If a payment did reach your PayPal account, you can accept it and the order continues on its original terms; the order page tells you whether that is still open to you and until when. Once it is not, the order expires and your copy goes back on the market. You lose nothing. Where the buyer has marked a payment sent, the order stays open for you to confirm rather than closing on the due date.
A payment arrived after the order expired. What can I do?
Report it on the expired order: the amount that reached your PayPal account, and when it arrived. The buyer sees the same record. You then choose between continuing the order and refunding. Continuing keeps the original terms, the same total, shipping address, and service, and we re-check the listing the moment you accept. If another collector has bought or reserved that copy in the meantime, the acceptance fails and recording a refund is the remaining path.
Rare Bindings records participant attestations and does not independently verify the PayPal transfer or refund.
How does refunding a late payment work?
You send the refund to the buyer yourself through PayPal, then record it on the order. The record stays pending until the buyer tells us what reached them: their confirmation completes it, and a report that nothing arrived keeps the record open and marked disputed for the two of you to settle in the order conversation. PayPal does not return its receiving fee on a refund. If the buyer agrees in that conversation to accept less to cover it, we record the partial refund against their own agreeing message. That is a choice for the two of you, never a requirement, and we do not calculate or guarantee any split.
Where available, use PayPal's refund action on the original Goods & Services transaction. Rare Bindings does not execute or independently verify that refund.
Does Rare Bindings take a fee?
No. Listings are free, and the money goes straight from the buyer to your PayPal address.
Rare Bindings deducts no marketplace fee. PayPal deducts a Goods & Services receiving fee from every sale, and may add cross-border, currency-conversion, or account-specific fees. Rare Bindings policy does not allow sellers to add a surcharge for PayPal fees. Regional PayPal terms and applicable law may add further restrictions.
