Marketplace payment guide

A Gentle Guide to Marketplace Payments

You pay your fellow collector directly. We quietly keep the records safe.

We believe passing a treasured book to its next reader should be a safe and peaceful experience. To make that happen, PayPal helps the funds travel securely between you and the other collector.

Here are a few gentle reminders on what to look for before sending a payment or wrapping a book for its journey.

Rare Bindings does not process or independently verify the payment, refund, dispute, account ownership, or protection eligibility.

The four records that should agree

The payment model

The Payment Journey: Who Does What

Rare Bindings (We hold the details)

Your order page is your shared record. We clearly display the item price, shipping costs, the final total, and the seller's saved PayPal address.

Supporting note: Rare Bindings does not process or independently verify the payment, refund, dispute, account ownership, or protection eligibility.

Buyer & Seller (You move the funds)

We happily take no cut of your sale and step completely back from the money. Once an order is placed, buyers simply send the funds directly to the seller via PayPal Goods & Services.

Supporting note: Rare Bindings takes no cut and does not process or independently verify the payment. After placing the order, pay with PayPal Goods & Services using the saved address and total shown on the order.

PayPal (The secure bridge)

PayPal securely manages the transaction, applying their standard Goods & Services receiving fee to the sale. (A kind reminder: Rare Bindings policy does not allow sellers to add a surcharge to cover PayPal fees).

Supporting note: Rare Bindings deducts no marketplace fee. PayPal deducts a Goods & Services receiving fee from every sale, and may add cross-border, currency-conversion, or account-specific fees. Rare Bindings policy does not allow sellers to add a surcharge for PayPal fees. Regional PayPal terms and applicable law may add further restrictions.

Buyer checklist

For the Buyer: A Cozy Checklist

Before you send your payment, take a deep breath and follow these simple steps:

  1. Start from the order page: Always use the exact total and the specific PayPal address shown on your Rare Bindings order. We will never ask you to send money anywhere else.

Supporting note: Check this address against your order page before sending money — Rare Bindings will never ask you to pay a different one.

  2. Always choose Goods & Services: When in PayPal, select “Paying for an item or service.” This is crucial, as Friends & Family payments are not meant for commercial purchases and do not qualify for Buyer Protection.

Supporting note: Friends & Family/personal payments are not eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection and must not be used for a commercial purchase.

  3. Double-check the details: Ensure the amount and currency match your order perfectly before hitting send.

  4. Mark it sent: Pop back over to Rare Bindings to mark the payment as sent! This gives the seller a happy little notification that the funds are on the way.

Seller checklist

For the Seller: A Cozy Checklist

Before you wrap up that beautiful edition and send it on its way, please ensure everything is in order:

Confirm the payment

Seller checklist

  1. Confirm the funds safely landed: Always log directly into your PayPal app or browser to verify the payment is sitting in your account. For your own safety, never rely on an email, screenshot, or a message from the buyer.

Supporting verification checks

  1. Sign in directly to PayPal in your browser or the PayPal app. Do not rely on an email, screenshot, or buyer message as proof of payment.
  2. Find the original payment in PayPal Activity and open its Transaction Details.
  3. Confirm that the amount and currency match the Rare Bindings order before you ship.

Prepare the shipment

Seller checklist

  1. Ship to the exact address: Only send the book to the delivery address shown on the Rare Bindings order. If the address in PayPal's Transaction Details looks different, simply pause and resolve the mismatch before shipping.
  2. Ship so you can prove it: Always purchase online tracking that you control. Keep your postage receipts, your tracking numbers, and any photos you took of the book's condition and packaging.

Supporting shipping evidence checks

  1. Ship to the delivery address on the Rare Bindings order. Compare it against any delivery address PayPal shows in Transaction Details, and if the two do not match, do not ship until the mismatch is resolved.
  2. Use online tracking that you control as the seller. Buy the label or tracking yourself, keep the tracking number, and make sure the carrier updates it online.
  3. Keep evidence of the listing, the copy’s stated condition, packing, posting, tracking, and delivery.

Protection boundaries

Protection is conditional, and PayPal decides.

Sending the payment as "Paying for an item or service" may qualify an otherwise eligible purchase for PayPal Buyer Protection. PayPal decides, under the terms for the buyer's PayPal account.

Rare Bindings does not process or independently verify the payment, refund, dispute, account ownership, or protection eligibility.

Community safety

Keeping Our Community Safe

To ensure our marketplace remains a trusted haven for book lovers, please keep these gentle boundaries in mind:

  • About Buyer Protection: Sending your payment as a Goods & Services transaction is the best way to qualify for PayPal Buyer Protection. Please note that PayPal ultimately decides eligibility based on the terms in your specific country.
  • Navigating changes and overpayments: If a buyer ever claims they overpaid, never send a separate refund or bank transfer. If a refund is truly needed, solely use PayPal's official refund tool on the original transaction.
  • Stick to the plan: Keep the money and the parcel tied to the original order. Please politely decline if a buyer asks to use gift cards, wants to arrange their own courier, or asks to change the payment destination.
  • If things go astray: If a misunderstanding ever arises that you can't resolve together, kindly and promptly open a case in the PayPal Resolution Centre and follow their guidance.

Supporting refund and diversion notes

  • If a buyer claims an overpayment, do not send a separate refund or transfer.
  • Do not buy gift cards, use a courier arranged by the buyer, or accept a different payment destination.
  • Where available, use PayPal's refund action on the original Goods & Services transaction. Rare Bindings does not execute or independently verify that refund.

When the order is disputed

Disputes and collection.

Act promptly in the PayPal Resolution Centre, and follow the deadlines and evidence requests it shows. In-person collection can carry reduced protection. Some regional PayPal terms describe a QR-code exception, but Rare Bindings does not generate a PayPal QR-code collection payment. We send payment instructions by email. Check the terms for the account and the transaction.

Official terms

Your account country changes the terms.

Fees, account eligibility, protection rules, deadlines, and collection exceptions all vary by country. Check that PayPal is showing the country attached to your account before you rely on either page, and change the locale if it is not.

Questions

What buyers and sellers ask.

Does Rare Bindings process the PayPal payment?

No. The buyer pays the seller directly through PayPal Goods & Services, and Rare Bindings takes no cut. Rare Bindings does not process or independently verify the payment, refund, dispute, account ownership, or protection eligibility.

Can I use Friends & Family or a personal payment?

Friends & Family/personal payments are not eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection and must not be used for a commercial purchase.

What fees apply?

Rare Bindings deducts no marketplace fee.

When does PayPal protection apply?

Sending the payment as "Paying for an item or service" may qualify an otherwise eligible purchase for PayPal Buyer Protection. PayPal decides, under the terms for the buyer's PayPal account. PayPal's protection rules are not the same in every country. Some countries’ terms exclude categories such as “items intended for resale”, which can affect eligibility, but that does not mean every Rare Bindings order falls outside protection. Read the terms for the country the PayPal account is registered in, and let PayPal decide whether a particular purchase qualifies.

What should a seller check before shipping?

Before shipping, inspect the original PayPal Transaction Details. Confirm the amount, currency, and delivery address, and retain the shipping evidence PayPal requires. Seller Protection is conditional under your regional PayPal terms.

How should a refund be sent?

Where available, use PayPal's refund action on the original Goods & Services transaction. Rare Bindings does not execute or independently verify that refund.

What if there’s a dispute, or the buyer collects in person?

Act promptly in the PayPal Resolution Centre, and follow the deadlines and evidence requests it shows. In-person collection can carry reduced protection. Some regional PayPal terms describe a QR-code exception, but Rare Bindings does not generate a PayPal QR-code collection payment. We send payment instructions by email. Check the terms for the account and the transaction.
